The Berger VLD (Very Low Drag) Hunting rifle bullet is one of the flattest-shooting hunting bullets available. It shares the same design as the VLD Target series but features a thinner J4 Precision Jacket for rapid expansion on game.
Designed for optimal terminal performance, the bullet penetrates approximately 2–3 inches into vital tissue before expanding, creating a large wound cavity (up to 15 inches). This ensures maximum energy transfer, significant tissue damage, and strong hydrostatic shock for an effective and ethical kill.
The secant ogive design reduces drag during flight, resulting in a flatter trajectory, less wind drift, and higher retained velocity. For best performance, VLD bullets are often loaded close to or touching the rifling in single-shot applications, although some rifles may perform better with up to .150″ jump.
